My Review
Quick Take
A beautifully designed collection containing three distinctly different horror stories: a birthday séance that goes horribly wrong, a haunted house where no one believes the woman sounding the alarm, and a cursed winter getaway among college friends. ‘The Nightmare House’ was the clear standout for me, but the entire collection makes for an accessible and entertaining spooky-season read.
Who Should Read This
Readers who enjoy short horror collections, séances, haunted houses, isolated cabins, supernatural curses, and stories that can be completed in one or two sittings. It is also a great choice for readers who want seasonal horror without committing to a lengthy novel.
Full review belowSometimes I Scare Myself by Jeneva Rose features three separate horror stories, each built around a different nightmare.
In ‘Never Kill the Medium,’ a carefully planned birthday dinner takes a dangerous turn when an uninvited medium transforms the celebration into something much darker.
‘The Nightmare House’ follows a family attempting to begin again in a beautiful older home after leaving Chicago. When Kristin begins experiencing disturbing events inside the house, her family questions whether the danger is real or connected to her recent postpartum struggles.
Finally, ‘All Curses Are Final’ sends a group of college friends to an isolated cabin for one last trip before graduation. A snowstorm, unresolved relationship drama, and a deadly curse quickly turn the vacation into a fight for survival.
