My Review

Quick Take

A supernatural thriller that uses illustrations as an actual part of the storytelling. As Teddy’s drawings become increasingly disturbing, Mallory begins to question where they are coming from and what they might be trying to reveal. Hidden Pictures delivers a unique reading experience, an unexpected turn, and a mystery that kept me invested until the end.

Who Should Read This

Thriller and suspense readers looking for something a little different from the typical mystery. This is especially worth picking up if you enjoy supernatural elements, unexpected twists, and books that play with how a story is told. The illustrations make this one stand out because you get to examine Teddy’s drawings right alongside Mallory as the mystery unfolds.

Mallory Quinn is trying to rebuild her life after addiction, a stay in a halfway house, and the loss of her sister. With the help of her sponsor, she lands her first job since getting sober: babysitting a young boy named Teddy for the summer.

Mallory moves into the guest house on Teddy’s family’s property and quickly forms a bond with him. Teddy is rarely without his sketchbook, and at first, his drawings seem like exactly what you would expect from a child.

Then the pictures begin to change.

Teddy starts producing increasingly disturbing images that seem far beyond what a young child should be able to create. As Mallory tries to understand where the drawings are coming from, she begins to suspect that they may be connected to something much bigger happening around Teddy and his family.

The deeper Mallory digs, the harder it becomes to separate what is supernatural from what is real, and Teddy’s pictures may be telling a story that no one else is willing to see.
